How to Hook up a Dryer Vent in a Tight Space

How to Hook up a Dryer Vent in a Tight Space

Technically, a dryer vent needs adequate space for ventilation. Such a clearance space is needed to minimize noise and ensure that the dryer is functioning properly.

But what if you have limited space? Can you install a dryer vent too close to the wall? It might be possible, but it can be done!

Keep scrolling to find out who to hook up a dryer vent in a tight space.

Dryer Venting Close To a Wall

Though you need ample clearance when installing a dryer vent, you can override this. If you have too small space, you can still hook up one by using a special dry vent connector. These are called offset dryer vents.

These vents allow rotational flexibility and adjust the distance between the center of each vent. Thus, making it possible to install a dryer vent a bit close to the wall. Or too close to the wall, in this case.

Materials needed

Before we install a vent, make sure to have these materials on hand.

Socket drive or flat blade screwdriver

Adjustable wrench

1 HVAC foil tape

1 offset dryer vent kit

2 adjustable stainless steel worm band ( 4.5 inches)

Yellow PTFE seal tape

Step by Step Instructions on How to Hook up a Dryer Vent Close to the Wall

So, dryer vents are of two types, electric and gas. The steps are basically the same except for one. So if you have an electric dryer vent, you may skip step number 1.

1. Connect to the gas line

Turn the gas valve off and unplug the power cord from the outlet. Using a yellow PTFE tape, wrap each fitting two to three times in a clockwise direction.

Attach one end to the gas inlet fitting and the other end to the gas supply line. Ensure that both ends are tightened. You may use a hand wrench for this one. Ensure that the connection is snug but be careful not to over tighten them.

Before proceeding to step number 2, we have to check for leaks first. Turn the gas valve on and brush soapy water on the gas connections. If it bubbles, there is a leak. Call a plumber to fix it.

2. Preparing the periscope dryer vent.

A periscope dryer vent is also referred to as the offset vent. This installation allows you to install the vent closer to the walls. So, we’re offsetting the large clearance space, hence the name.

Measure the offset distance between the center of the dryer discharge vent and the center of the connecting wall vent.

3. Adjust the two vent connecting holes of the offset duct.

It’s either you slide the two ends apart or hold them closer together. The goal is to keep the holes in proper alignment. Then using an HVAC seal tape, seal the open joints. Then lock the sliding duct into position.

Ensure that the seal is tight to prevent gas from leaking (for gas vents). And it will also prevent lint, dirt, and dust from seeping in.

4. Connect the duct to the wall vent

Connect the small diameter end of the offset duct to the wall connection duct. Attach it with an aluminum foil duct tape and position the offset duct at the proper angle. Ensure that it’s positioned correctly for the final connection to the dryer.

5. Connect the offset duct to the dryer discharge vent by covering it with the stainless steel band worm gear hose.

Then connect the offset vent to the dryer’s discharge vent. Make sure that it fits snugly. Or may use a socket drive or screwdriver to tighten the connection.

6. Plug in the dryer to see if it works.

Tips on Installing an Offset Dryer Vent

  1. Do not use standard duct tape. It won’t be able to connect the joints since it dries out quickly. A metal foil tape is ideal to use. This can give each connection a very tight seal.
  2. Ensure every connection is tightly sealed. Especially for a gas dryer. Leaks may carry carbon dioxide to the environment.
  3. Purchase the appropriate size of the off dryer vent kit. The smallest sized kit is often advisable.
  4. Always follow safety procedures on operating your dryer.
  5. Have a professional clean the dryer chassis every couple of years. Always clean the area around the dryer. Remove lint regularly to prevent buildup. You may also toss in a dryer sheet along with your laundry. This should clean up the lint easier.
  6. Make sure there isn’t any obstruction in the dryer vent that may prevent airflow. You may use a broomstick to position it correctly. Otherwise, any obstruction can be a fire hazard.  It also helps to know the early sign of an impending dryer fire so that you can make the necessary changes asap.

FAQs

What is a periscope dryer vent?

It’s also called an offset vent. It’s used to override the larger clearance needed to connect a dryer vent to the wall. Some models may allow as little as 3 inches of space from the dryer vent and wall.

Are periscope vent adapters okay to use?

These are rectangular and may have some disadvantages. This may be more prone to lint buildup. So if ever you’re going to use one, make sure that there isn’t any obstruction. Otherwise, any build-up can cause dryer fires.

Which type of dryer vent is applicable for tight spaces?

The aluminum type of dryer vent is more suitable for tight spaces.
